Irene Serrano to premiere her show on perimenopause in Teruel

The Teatro Marín is set to host the European premiere of 'PERIMENOPARTY' on 5 November at 20:30. This innovative performance, crafted by Teruel-born actress Irene Serrano during her Fulbright scholarship in New York, combines humour, music, dance, and physical theatre to challenge taboos surrounding perimenopause and female ageing.

During a presentation at the Ayuntamiento de Teruel, Culture Councillor Carlos Méndez and Serrano discussed the upcoming show, which has already sold 350 tickets. 'PERIMENOPARTY' previously debuted in a smaller format at the Hollywood Fringe Festival in Los Angeles and had its large-scale version launched at The Barrow Group, an off-Broadway theatre company in New York.

About the show

Serrano describes 'PERIMENOPARTY' as a fierce, sensual, and comedic celebration of perimenopause. The narrative follows her character, who receives an invitation to the 'Waiting Room of Menopause' the day after turning 40. This leads her to confront the changes in her body and the fear of ageing and disappearing.

The performance lasts approximately 75 minutes and features a blend of physical theatre, clowning, buffoonery, dance, stand-up comedy, music, puppetry, karaoke, improvisation, and audiovisual elements. With absurd humour and intimate moments, Serrano navigates themes of puberty, fertility, and perimenopause while critiquing the anti-ageing industry and the societal silence surrounding this life stage. Each performance culminates in a shared celebration.

About Irene Serrano

Irene Serrano is an actress, comedian, screenwriter, and creator from Teruel. With 15 years of experience in comedy production and management, she transitioned to performing on stage four years ago. Over the past year, she has been based in New York as a Fulbright Arts Scholar, training at The Barrow Group, which has also hosted notable alumni like Anne Hathaway. During her time there, she has made a significant impact within the New York clown community and at the school itself.

Serrano expressed her excitement about premiering the show in Europe, particularly in her hometown. 'PERIMENOPARTY' was born in an international context, and she aims to take it on a global tour. Councillor Méndez thanked Serrano for choosing Teruel as the venue for this remarkable show and encouraged local residents to attend the eclectic performance, which promises to bring smiles to all audiences.
