OSPA returns to Avilés with a programme dedicated to Kodály, Chopin and Lutosławski

The Orquesta Sinfónica del Principado de Asturias (OSPA) is set to return to Avilés for the first time this season, presenting a concert that showcases a journey through European music, from the Hungarian rhythms of Kodály to the romanticism of Chopin and the symphonic strength of Lutosławski. The performance will be conducted by French maestro Alexandre Bloch, with Latvian pianist Georgijs Osokins as the guest soloist.

The concert will take place today at the Casa Municipal de Cultura in Avilés and tomorrow at the Auditorio Príncipe Felipe in Oviedo, both starting at 19:30. This marks the third subscription programme of the 2026-2027 season.

Concert programme

The evening will open with Zoltán Kodály's Dances of Galánta, a vibrant and colourful piece that brings to life the richness of Hungarian folk music. Following this, one of the highlights of the evening will feature Georgijs Osokins performing Frédéric Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor, Op. 21, a composition that blends virtuosic passages with moments of extraordinary delicacy and lyricism.

The second half of the concert will be dedicated to Witold Lutosławski's Concerto for Orchestra, one of the major symphonic works of the 20th century. This piece allows for a dialogue among the various instrumental families, demanding precision, agility, and close coordination among the musicians.

Featured artists

Alexandre Bloch has established a notable career in both symphonic and operatic repertoire. He gained international recognition after winning first prize at the Donatella Conducting Competition in 2012 and is currently the principal conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica y Coro de RTVE.

Osokins, who is based in Berlin, is the first Baltic pianist to sign an exclusive contract with the prestigious label. His career has included performances with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and the Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa, as well as tours in Japan and the Baltic states.
