Sa Refinadora has inaugurated the collective exhibition 'Mesas y amigos', featuring the work of twelve artists, including the prominent Mallorcan painter and sculptor José Luis Mesas. The exhibition, which opened on 4 November 2026, offers a journey through contemporary art, encompassing painting, sculpture, photography, and mixed techniques.
Jaume Llompart, the Mayor of Marratxí, remarked, "This exhibition reminds us that creativity is also nourished by dialogue and personal relationships." The display highlights the connections between artistic creation, friendship, and the exchange of experiences.
José Luis Mesas, born in Palma in 1973, boasts over three decades of artistic experience. His work is known for its vibrant colours, expressive forms, and constant experimentation, navigating between figuration, abstraction, and pop art. Throughout his career, Mesas has exhibited in Mallorca, various locations on the Spanish mainland, and Miami, with notable large-scale projects including a mural on the façade of the Hotel Artmadams in Palma.
The exhibition catalogue features significant works by Mesas, such as 'Gran Muralla' and 'Catedral con Gran Muralla', both created in 2025 using mixed techniques on canvas, measuring five metres wide and two metres high. Other pieces include 'Plaza de España' (2015) and 'La niña pequeña' (2023), showcasing different stages of his artistic journey.
Alongside Mesas, the exhibition includes contributions from artists Xu Zheng Ran, Jaime Verd Miró, Pilar Correa Mor, Sylvia Baker de Perkal, Miguel Ramón Monegal, Mateo Jaume Ponseti (known as Majapo), Nuria Fuentes, Cecilia María de Lassaletta, Mayte Spínola, Chus Fernández, and Mónica Vaquer. This selection brings together works from creators linked to Mallorca and those with extensive national and international experience, exploring themes such as identity, nature, emotions, and the human experience.
The diversity of techniques and artistic approaches is a key attraction of the exhibition. Jaime Verd Miró's photographic interventions coexist with Pilar Correa Mor's portraits, Sylvia Baker de Perkal's Mediterranean landscapes, and Miguel Ramón Monegal's sculptures. Additional contributions include the compositions of Majapo and Nuria Fuentes, Cecilia María de Lassaletta's abstraction, Mayte Spínola's symbolic universe, Chus Fernández's landscapes, and Mónica Vaquer's ceramic creations that incorporate the Japanese technique of 'gyotaku'.
Mayor Llompart emphasised the exhibition's value as a meeting point between artists and the public, stating, "Beyond differences in style and trajectory, this exhibition reminds us that creativity is also nourished by dialogue and personal relationships." He expressed gratitude to the participating artists for their commitment and generosity in sharing their works with the local community.
The title 'Mesas y amigos' reflects the collective nature of artistic creation, allowing visitors to discover how artists from different generations, backgrounds, and sensibilities develop their unique languages while engaging in dialogue within a shared exhibition space. Sa Refinadora continues to host cultural initiatives that bring contemporary artistic expressions closer to the public. The exhibition will be open for viewing throughout October and November, providing residents of Marratxí and interested visitors the opportunity to explore the works of José Luis Mesas and his fellow artists.
