Sevilla and Granada join forces to promote culture and humanism

The mayor of Sevilla, José Luis Sanz, welcomed the mayor of Granada, Marífran Carazo, to the Ayuntamiento (City Hall) to formalise a significant agreement focused on the European Capital of Culture initiative. The two mayors have signed a Declaration of Intent to collaborate on promoting their cultural and humanistic heritage.

Mayor Sanz stated that this agreement reinforces the city’s commitment to enhancing and disseminating Andalusian heritage, establishing a partnership between two of Spain's major artistic, literary, and heritage centres. He remarked, “With this pact, we open a new chapter of experience exchange, joint promotion of reading, and initiatives that highlight the legacy of the Generation of '27 and the values of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.”

He further emphasised the importance of collaboration between Granada and Sevilla, stating, “Once again, Granada and Sevilla express their willingness to foster collaborative spaces that encourage the circulation of ideas, the exchange of experiences, and the connection of their respective cultural and creative ecosystems.”

Additionally, Mayor Sanz expressed Sevilla's support for Granada's bid to become the European Capital of Culture, a project he believes will enrich the cultural landscape of Andalusia and enhance the international profile of both cities. This agreement continues the coordinated efforts that both municipalities have been undertaking since the signing of the protocol for the 500th anniversary of the marriage between Charles V and Isabel of Portugal.
