Alicante Chamber of Commerce celebrates 140th anniversary with school carol competition

The Alicante Chamber of Commerce is celebrating its 140th anniversary by organising a provincial school carol competition. Educational centres are invited to perform their own rendition of the original carol created by the institution, with prizes totalling €6,000 available for the winning schools.

The competition, titled 'This Christmas, Alicante sings united,' aims to highlight all productive sectors of the province while combining music, creativity, and the festive spirit in honour of the Chamber's long history. Schools can interpret the carol 'El barco de San Nicolás,' composed specifically for this anniversary, and are encouraged to present a unique entry under the guidance of a designated teacher or representative.

Participating schools can submit a single entry, using the original lyrics and musical composition as a foundation for their creative interpretations. They have the option to perform the carol in Spanish, Valencian, or English, or even mix the three languages. Various musical styles, original arrangements, instrumental accompaniments, or a cappella performances are permitted, provided the original title and references to the province's productive sectors are maintained.

The Chamber has established three prizes for the winning schools: €3,000 for the first place, €2,000 for the second, and €1,000 for the third. A jury composed of professionals from the musical, educational, and cultural fields will evaluate entries based on musical quality, interpretation, creativity, and teamwork among students.

Schools can submit their applications until 30 November 2026. Through this initiative, the Alicante Chamber of Commerce aims to engage the wider Alicante community in its 140th-anniversary celebrations, fostering values such as creativity, coexistence, teamwork, and a connection to the region among younger generations.
