University museum hosts workshops on archaeology and ancient Rome

The University Museum A Domus do Mitreo is launching two new workshops focused on archaeology and ancient Rome, scheduled for 7 and 10 November.

Family workshop on archaeological autopsy

The first workshop, titled 'An archaeological autopsy: what the bones of the past tell us', will be led by Edgar Camarós, a professor of Prehistory at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC). This interactive session will demonstrate how the study of skeletal remains can provide valuable insights into our past. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in analyses and tests conducted in a small laboratory set up at the museum.

This workshop is recommended for individuals aged eight and above, with limited spaces available. It will take place at 12:00 on Saturday, 7 November, lasting approximately one hour. Those interested in attending should contact the museum by calling 610 323 926 from Tuesday to Saturday, between 11:00 and 14:00 and 16:30 to 19:30, or by emailing museomitreo.lugo@fundacionusc.gal.

Specialist forum on the Roman Empire

In collaboration with the Lugo Provincial Council, the museum is also organising a workshop focused on the Roman Empire, featuring seven researchers from various Spanish universities. This multidisciplinary forum will include epigraphists, historians, and philologists, who will discuss different structural elements that enhance our understanding of this complex empire and its significant historical influence.

The session will begin with F. Wulff, who will compare the characteristics of the Roman Empire with other major eastern states, such as the Han dynasty in China. Following this, J. Santos and J. J. Palao will examine the methods of conquest, particularly in the extensive province of Citerior, alongside the role of the military.

Additional presentations will be made by J. L. Jiménez and M.ª J. Castillo, focusing on urban planning and the evolution of cities. A. Ruiz will address the often-overlooked female perspective in research, while M.ª C. González will conclude the event with a discussion on religion as a means of integrating communities in northwestern Hispania.

This workshop will take place on 10 November at the Casa del Saber, starting at 09:45, and entry will be free.
