Civivox Condestable is currently hosting the 'women of the Sahel' exhibition, which aims to highlight and acknowledge the contributions of female leaders from this region of Africa. The collection features photographs by Juan Luis Rod and José Naranjo and is part of the cultural cycle 'Africa Imprescindible'. Visitors can view the exhibition until 10 January 2027.
The exhibition showcases 65 photographs, along with a map, an audiovisual piece, and various explanatory texts. These works stem from the journeys undertaken since 2019 by photojournalist Juan Luis Rod, a regular contributor to El País, The Guardian, and Deutsche Welle, and journalist José Naranjo, who is based in Senegal. They have travelled through several Sahel countries, including Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Mauritania, and Senegal, to capture the stories of women who serve as role models in their communities.
These women are not only active in their local areas but are also beginning to make their voices heard on the international stage, advocating for equal rights, access to education, and recognition of the vital role women play in building a more just and sustainable future. This activism occurs against a backdrop of extreme poverty, injustice, and the severe impacts of climate change that affect the Sahel region.
The exhibition was presented by Maider Beloki Unzu, the Councillor for Culture, Festivals, and Sport, alongside Miriam Martón Pérez, the Director General of Social Protection and Development Cooperation for the Government of Navarra. They were joined by Sara Aldaba and María Ibáñez, representing the 'Africa Imprescindible' cycle and the Ateneo Navarro, respectively, as well as the photographers themselves, who will conduct a presentation and guided tour at 7 PM on the opening day.
'Africa Imprescindible' is celebrating its 26th edition from 21 October to 22 December in Pamplona, Burlada, and Tudela, with a focus on African women. The cycle is organised by seven non-profit organisations in Navarra: Fundación Felipe Rinaldi, Medicus Mundi, Ojos del Mundo, Oxfam Intermón, Proclade Yanapay, Solidaridad, Educación, Desarrollo (SED), and TAU Fundazioa. It is funded by the City Council of Pamplona and the Government of Navarra, as well as the Fundación Felipe Rinaldi.
In addition to the exhibition, the programme includes dance workshops, literary encounters, dialogues, screenings, and other cultural activities.
