Esther Duflo discusses moral debt of wealthy nations towards the poor
The French Nobel laureate, now based in Switzerland, addresses the moral obligations of rich countries regarding their emissions. She does not believe France is in decline and suggests that political errors can be corrected.
Esther Duflo, the French economist and Nobel Prize winner, recently spoke about the responsibilities of wealthy nations towards poorer countries in relation to climate change. During her visit to the Ciutadella campus of Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona on 28 October, she highlighted the moral debt that affluent nations owe to less developed countries due to their significant contributions to global emissions.
Duflo, who has recently relocated to Switzerland, expressed her views on the current state of France, asserting that she does not believe the country is in decline. Instead, she pointed out that there have been political mistakes that could be rectified to improve the situation.
“There comes a point where staying in the United States makes you complicit,” Duflo remarked, emphasising the urgency of addressing these issues on a global scale.
