Feroz awards host female directors in Pontevedra to challenge cinematic norms

The Feroz awards, in collaboration with the Pontevedra City Council, are set to host a series of feminist-focused activities throughout November, aligning with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25 November. This event aims to raise awareness about the violence and abuse faced by women globally and to advocate for policies aimed at eradicating such issues.

This year’s programme includes screenings and discussions under the theme ‘Rompendo o canon’ (Breaking the canon), showcasing films created by women that challenge stereotypes surrounding the ‘perfect victim’, the ‘good mother’, and the ‘submissive woman’ through genres such as thriller, horror, and absurdism.

Highlighted screenings and discussions

The series will feature several prominent female directors, including Carlota Pereda, Elena Martín Gimeno, Jaione Camborda, and Ainhoa Rodríguez, who will visit Pontevedra on various dates in November to engage with audiences about their work and the motivations behind their storytelling.

  • 6 November: Screening of ‘Cerdita’ followed by a discussion with director Carlota Pereda, moderated by journalist and filmmaker Paula Cons. The film subverts the traditional ‘final girl’ trope in slasher films, focusing on a bullied overweight teenager seeking revenge.
  • 9 November: Elena Martín Gimeno will present ‘Creatura’ alongside journalist Belén López. The film tackles the taboo of female sexual desire and body shame, featuring a protagonist filled with frustrations and rage.
  • 20 November: Jaione Camborda will discuss her film ‘O corno’, which presents a poignant narrative advocating for women's autonomy over their bodies. The film won the Golden Shell at the 2023 San Sebastián Film Festival.
  • 23 November: Ainhoa Rodríguez will screen ‘Destello Bravío’, exploring the lives of real women in a rural community who rebel against traditional roles.

All screenings will take place at 19:00 at the Faculty of Communication, with free entry available through tickets obtained from the Tourism Office in Plaza de España, starting seven days before each event. A maximum of two tickets per person will be allowed, and an online registration form will be available for those unable to visit the office in person.

Masterclass with Clara Bilbao

On 16 November, award-winning costume designer Clara Bilbao will conduct a masterclass on her craft, in collaboration with the Debut programme at the University of Vigo’s Master in Creative Direction and Fashion Design. Bilbao, who has won three Goya awards, will share insights from her extensive career in film and television costume design.
