The La Florida neighbourhood in L'Hospitalet recently celebrated the castanyada, a traditional Catalan festival, with a vibrant afternoon of activities for children. The Avinguda de la Primavera was bustling with families as the local Festival Committee prepared a popular tasting of roasted chestnuts and sweet muscatel wine.
“It’s a celebration that attracts everyone. The children enjoy workshops and entertainment, while the older crowd loves the chestnuts and muscatel,” explained Pilar Martínez, president of the committee.
Among the children's activities were face painting and a workshop for creating personalised badges. Young participant Nantira expressed her enjoyment, stating, “I liked painting the masks the most.” Her friend Aron preferred the badge-making workshop, as he enjoyed “painting and cutting out.” Another participant, Yanis, mentioned that he does not celebrate Halloween but rather the castanyada, adding that he had a “great time.”
The afternoon continued with performances by the capgrossos, large costumed figures, and the local children’s devil groups. Originally, the castanyada activities were set to coincide with a medieval fair organised by the City Council; however, the fair was postponed due to mourning following a recent train accident in Urda, Toledo.
