More than 200 participants have confirmed their attendance at the first International Congress of Pelota Vasca, scheduled for Thursday, 12 November, at the Labrit fronton in Pamplona. The event, supported by the European project IRUHBI Pilota, offers free registration, which remains open.

The opening session will feature a presentation by Unai Laso, a professional pelotari, alongside Andrea Lusarreta, president of the Navarra Federation of Pelota Vasca. In a discussion moderated by former pelotari Mikel Idoate, they will address the challenges facing pelota vasca, opportunities for its future development, and share their experiences in both competitive and administrative roles within the sport.

One of the highlights of the congress will be a tribute to Juanito Moya, known as Juan Moya Bernedo, who is credited with inventing the remonte, a unique variation of pelota vasca that originated in Pamplona. The local government has named a street in his honour, recognising his contributions to the sport, particularly his innovation in the early 20th century that enhanced the game's technique and speed.

The congress will cover various topics including health and technology in pelota, education, tradition, the role of women in the sport, and the media's influence on the promotion and understanding of pelota vasca among the public. These subjects will form the basis of five planned discussion panels.

Additionally, the congress coincides with a three-day working visit for representatives from media outlets worldwide to learn about the 'Pamplona, Capital Mundial de la Pelota' project, which aims to highlight the cultural, historical, and sporting heritage of pelota vasca. The itinerary includes activities related to the sport, supported by the IRUHBI Pilota project, and aims to promote Pamplona as a vibrant, modern city deeply connected to the excitement and tradition of pelota.

Journalists will have the opportunity to explore the city through a guided tour of the Old Town, followed by a welcome event at the Labrit fronton, where they will gain insight into pelota vasca as part of Pamplona's cultural offerings. The programme also includes a visit to the Oteiza Museum in Alzuza and the Town Hall.
