Noveno Auditorio celebrates 181st anniversary of the Sociedad Filarmónica de Las Palmas

The programme 'Noveno Auditorio', hosted by Rubén Mayor, will commemorate the 181st anniversary of the Sociedad Filarmónica de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on 5 November at 21:00. The event will highlight the themes of the Foro Noviembre, an interdisciplinary meeting and debate space centred around music, which is celebrating its second edition this year under the auspices of the Sociedad Filarmónica.

The second edition of the Foro Noviembre will take place on 9 and 10 November, focusing on the research and study of music, with a special recognition of Lola de la Torre Champsaur, a prominent Canarian teacher and researcher. A commemorative concert will be held on 10 November at 20:00 at the Teatro Pérez Galdós, featuring the Orquesta Renacimiento, conducted by David Llano Díaz.

This year’s artistic proposal will take on a symphonic dimension, showcasing a repertoire linked to the history of the Sociedad Filarmónica and the Canary Islands. The concert will include works such as 'Obertura para la Exposición Industrial 1862' by Agustín Millares Torres, 'Nocturno nº 3' by Manuel Peñate Álvarez, 'Tarantela for flute and clarinet' by Camille Saint-Saëns, 'Responso a Fray Lesco' by Víctor Doreste, and 'Suite Sinfónica Canaria: Arrorró. Seguidillas' by Bernardino Valle. Additionally, the concert will feature the premiere of 'Cuando el mar abrazó al dolor' by young Canarian composer Celia Rivero Santana.

'Noveno Auditorio' will preview some of these themes, offering an exploration of 20th-century Soviet composition through two of its leading figures, Sergei Prokofiev and Dmitri Shostakovich. The programme will delve into Prokofiev's life contradictions, from child prodigy to avant-garde provocateur, navigating his global popularity while under the scrutiny of Stalinist censorship.

Following the segment on the Sociedad Filarmónica, an immersive analysis of Shostakovich's 'Violin Concerto No. 1' will take place, coinciding with performances by the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria, conducted by Karel Mark Chichon, on 12 and 13 November at the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus. 'Noveno Auditorio' will provide an acoustic breakdown of Shostakovich's atypical orchestration, highlighting the strategic omission of trumpets and trombones to ensure the soloist's prominence over a sombre sound mass, while reviewing the milestones of its four movements.

Beyond music, the programme will bridge connections with Canarian literature. Rubén Mayor will interview writer Román del Pino González, who has just published his third poetry collection, awarded the Pedro García Cabrera Poetry Prize 2025, titled 'Como el miedo de un molusco sin concha'. The book will be presented on the same day at the Museo de La Zafra in Santa Lucía de Tirajana, the author’s hometown.

To conclude the broadcast, regular contributor Paco Grimón will focus his segment, El Atril, on scores and sound stories that reference the month of November through their narrative, premiere, or inspiration.
