The Gijón Rural Foundation and the Municipal Sports Board have presented the third edition of scholarships for student athletes, an initiative designed to assist young individuals who manage to combine their education with participation in sports teams within the city.
The announcement was made at the Gijón City Hall, with contributions from Jorge Pañeda, the councillor for Sports and Education; Toño Migoya, director of the Gijón Rural Foundation; and Laura Lorenzo, a technician from the Municipal Sports Board.
This year's programme offers 25 scholarships for athletes born between 2010 and 2014, who are registered in Gijón and participate in a team sport in the city. The aim is to acknowledge the dedication of these young athletes and to help them continue their sporting activities alongside their academic pursuits.
The scholarships are divided into two categories: 10 first-category scholarships worth €300 each, and 15 second-category scholarships worth €250 each. The Gijón Rural Foundation, linked to Caja Rural, provides the funding for these scholarships, while the Municipal Sports Board is responsible for evaluating the applications.
A notable change in this third edition is the method of scholarship distribution. In collaboration with the Gijón Merchants' Union, the scholarships will be awarded in the form of gift cards that can be used at participating local businesses. This approach not only supports young athletes but also promotes local commerce.
The application period will open on 19 October and will remain open until 9 November. Interested individuals can submit their applications through the Gijón City Hall website or at municipal registries, in accordance with the conditions outlined in the call for applications.
With this third edition, the Gijón Rural Foundation and the Municipal Sports Board continue their commitment to supporting grassroots sports in the city, recognising the efforts of young people who balance their academic responsibilities with training and competition for their respective teams.
