Government of Castilla-La Mancha celebrates opening of Holy Door at Toledo Cathedral for Jubilee Year

The Government of Castilla-La Mancha has highlighted the significance of the opening ceremony of the Holy Door at the Gothic Cathedral of Toledo, which commemorates the Jubilee Year for its eighth centenary. This event, the first of its kind for Spain's Primatial Cathedral, was attended by Juan Alfonso Ruiz Molina, the regional Minister of Finance, Public Administration and Digital Transformation.

The ceremony took place on Sunday and marks the start of the Jubilee Year, celebrating the laying of the cathedral's first stone 800 years ago. Ruiz Molina expressed pride in the event, which he believes places Toledo at the "centre of attention" by showcasing its rich culture, history, heritage, religion, and tourism.

The ceremony began with a procession from the sacristy to the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, concluding at the main entrance of the Archbishop's residence, where the Archbishop of Toledo, Francisco Cerro Chaves, joined the procession. The group then proceeded to the Kings' Door, also known as the Door of Forgiveness, which is typically closed but opened for solemn occasions. The Archbishop performed the rite of opening before a mass was celebrated in the cathedral.

The Holy Door will remain open daily from half an hour before the start of the Jubilee mass. The Jubilee Year commemorates 800 years since King Ferdinand III and Archbishop Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada initiated the construction of the Gothic cathedral on 14 August 1226. This celebration will continue until 25 October 2027 and will include pilgrimages and various religious and cultural activities.

During the solemn event, Ruiz Molina was accompanied by several dignitaries, including Milagros Tolón, Minister of Education, Vocational Training and Sports; Pablo Sabrido, the Spanish Government's delegate in Castilla-La Mancha; Maria Castaño, the delegate for Finance, Public Administration and Digital Transformation in Toledo; and the city's mayor, Carlos Velázquez, among a significant representation of civil and military authorities.
