A new industrial and tertiary area of almost 91,000 square metres is set to be established along Avenida de Madrid in Vigo, next to the Alcampo supermarket. The Urban Planning Department is currently working on a special plan to advance the necessary urban planning procedures.
On Tuesday, the Urban Planning Department will initiate the process to develop a new area in Gandarón, directly opposite the Alcampo on Avenida de Madrid. Abel Caballero, the mayor of Vigo, announced the advancement of a special plan for a total area of 90,689 square metres, with 60% designated for industrial use and 40% for tertiary purposes. The process will involve requesting reports from relevant municipal services to progress within a maximum execution timeframe of six years.
Another topic on the agenda for the weekly Urban Planning meeting will be the approval of the parking project at Becerreira, Cabral. The local council has already begun the expropriation process for two plots near the Becerreira-Cabral Cultural and Recreational Centre to facilitate the construction of public parking. The parking area will cover 1,520 square metres, providing over 50 parking spaces.
Additionally, the Official Bulletin of the Province (BOP) recently published the call for the first Municipal Programme for the Mobilisation of Vacant Homes, known as the Vive Vigo Housing Plan. From now until 27 November 2027, interested individuals can apply for assistance from a programme with a budget of €700,000. This pioneering initiative, which has seen success in regions such as the Basque Country, allows the local council to act as an intermediary, negotiating affordable rental prices with homeowners who agree to lease their properties to the council for the rental market.
The local administration guarantees the agreed payment, even if the property remains unlet, and ensures the property is returned in the same condition it was received. A notable feature of the programme is the direct involvement of the council in the rental market for a period of five years. Furthermore, the council will subsidise part of the rent in cases where 30% of a family's income is insufficient to meet the agreed rental price.
The local government is also implementing another housing programme focused on providing rehabilitation assistance for flats to stimulate the rental market. With a budget of €2,150,000, which may be increased, this municipal initiative will fund not only renovation works but also the issuance of energy efficiency certificates and the procurement of insurance. The aim is to promote the rental market by providing grants of up to €20,000, which do not require repayment.
