Vigo mayor welcomes Xunta's agreement to discuss funding for 2030 World Cup

The mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero, announced on Friday that the president of the Xunta de Galicia, Alfonso Rueda, has positively responded to his request for a meeting regarding the financing of necessary improvements for the 2030 World Cup in Vigo. "I am absolutely satisfied with the acceptance of the meeting," said Caballero, who deemed it reasonable for Rueda to delegate his representation to the regional minister for the Presidency, Justice and Sports, Diego Calvo. "It would be better if he came himself, but we accept the minister's presence," he added.

Caballero explained that the primary aim of the meeting will be to agree on the funding for the works at Balaídos Stadium and other projects related to the World Cup, with a total investment of €107.5 million. According to the municipal proposal, this cost should be equally shared by the Vigo City Council, the Xunta de Galicia, and the Pontevedra Provincial Council.

The mayor also indicated that the Spanish government will be present at the meeting and that as soon as the provincial council responds to the municipal request, efforts will begin to set a date. "I am confident that this meeting will result in a funding agreement, as it is the only thing missing. Everything else is guaranteed," he asserted.

Regarding the timeline for the projects, Caballero assured that Vigo is prepared to complete the necessary works to host the 2030 World Cup. "The City Council has already started the works. We are relocating the collectors and guarantee that the stadium will be finished on time," he stated. He also mentioned that a visit from FIFA is expected in the coming weeks or months, during which Vigo will be able to demonstrate the technical feasibility and schedule of the projects. However, he warned that it will be essential to show a firm commitment to funding from all three administrations.
