Santa María la Mayor parish in Alcázar de San Juan presents its 8th centenary program to regional government

Alcázar de San Juan (Ciudad Real), October 9, 2026 - José Manuel Caballero, the second vice president of the Castilla-La Mancha government, visited the Santa María la Mayor parish to review the programming surrounding its 8th centenary. He was accompanied by the mayor, Rosa Melchor; the director general of Institutional Promotion, Ainhoa Aguado; councilors Gonzalo Redondo and Ana Isabel Abengózar; and the parish priest, Francisco Javier Quevedo.

The organizing committee, represented by Carolina Vela, announced that on Thursday, October 17, an evening videomapping event will transform the church's façade into a spectacular display of light, color, and sound. Caballero expressed gratitude for the invitation to learn about the upcoming events, highlighting the significance of the celebration for the local community. He noted, "This will undoubtedly be important for the people of Alcázar de San Juan to enjoy a light and sound spectacle that allows them to recognize the history of eight centuries of this parish, which is the oldest temple in the province of Ciudad Real."

The programming aims to commemorate the 8th centenary of its declaration as a parish by the Archbishop of Toledo, Fray Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada, in 1226. The events began on January 1, 2026, and will continue until December 27. Last August, Caballero had previously met with the organizing committee at the Palacio de Fuensalida regarding this celebration.

Finally, José Manuel Caballero reaffirmed his commitment to "reclaim and celebrate our history while maintaining and preserving our extensive historical heritage, as we are talking about the oldest parish in the province of Ciudad Real." He acknowledged the special affection that the people of Alcázar de San Juan hold for this parish.
