The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, and the vice president and councillor for Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, led a group of 42 participants from various social entities on a visit to Palma's fish market and fishing dock. This event was organised by the Maritime Museum of Mallorca to showcase the city's fishing heritage.
Galmes stated, “The fishing dock and the fish market are part of our identity as an island. It is gratifying that people from different entities have been able to experience up close an activity that has shaped the life of Palma and Mallorca for centuries.”
Participants included individuals from four organisations: Fundación Esment (11), Servicio de Empleo Weyler (10), Fundación Aspas (10), and Servicio de Empleo Palma Comunitaria (11).
The two-hour activity began in the auction area of Palma's fish market, where its president, Pedro Mercant, introduced the visit with a ten-minute documentary followed by a question-and-answer session. Participants then toured the dock, guided by Domingo Bonnín Bautista, president of the Balearic Federation of Fishermen's Guilds, who explained various fishing techniques.
During the visit, groups observed the fish auction and marketing system, becoming acquainted with traditional fishing vocabulary. The experience also provided insights into Mallorca's maritime heritage, the history of the fishing dock, and reflections on sustainable fishing practices.
