VI premios Crea recognise projects on granite dust and luso-galaico cinema

The VI premios Crea have recognised two projects that transform granite dust into artistic material and explore luso-galaico cinema. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 19 November.

Predoctoral researcher Sara Piñeiro and student Cristina Martínez have been honoured in the two categories of these awards, which aim to highlight significant actions within the creative sphere of the university community. Promoted by the Campus Crea with the support of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, these awards celebrate research, publications, works, and projects linked to creativity.

Awards and recognition

In the category for teaching and research staff, Piñeiro received a prize of €1,500 for her research titled "Esas estupendas materias duras", where granite dust is used to create a series of pieces for an artistic installation. "Receiving an award is always a joy, especially in the context of the university," Piñeiro stated, noting that "much of the process" leading to an artistic project is often "invisible", making recognitions like this a form of "encouragement and motivation".

In the category reserved for students, a recognition of €750 was awarded for the video essay "Terra luso-galaica de lendas e maxia", created by Communication Audiovisual graduate Cristina Martínez, based on her final degree project. This project focused on identifying the elements contributing to the construction of a "luso-galaico identity" through the analysis of film co-productions. "I receive this award with great gratitude and as motivation to continue my education in the field of communication," Martínez expressed, adding her excitement about "having my name associated with the University of Vigo".

Details of the awarded projects

Artist and researcher Sara Piñeiro was recognised for her "plastic research around the granite dust of silvestre semimoreno", sourced from an abandoned family quarry. In her project, this dust becomes the "central material of the work, not only as waste but as traces, memory, biographical sediment, and atmospheric archive". Piñeiro has combined these materials with dust from other types of granite, creating a collection of "fragile surfaces" that form a "plastic archive", showcasing the "tension between monumental stone and waste".

Meanwhile, Cristina Martínez's final degree project, developed with Professor Anna Amorós, focuses on the analysis of eleven feature films and short films co-produced in Galicia and Portugal, released between 2020 and 2025. The aim is to identify "common visual, narrative, and aesthetic elements that contribute to the construction of a luso-galaico cultural identity". Martínez has noted that women "act as the driving force of action" in all the works, as well as the significance of landscape, memory, tradition, and their relationship with religion and spirituality.

The awards ceremony will take place on 19 November as part of the IV Research Day of Campus Crea, which will be held at the Faculty of Communication.
