Villarrubia de los Ojos, located in Ciudad Real, has announced a varied programme to celebrate wine tourism month, organised by the local council through its tourism department, in partnership with the cooperative El Progreso. Mayor Encarnación Medina stated, “For over a century, our commitment to the world of wine has been total, as our municipality is home to the oldest continuously operating cooperative winery in Spain, El Progreso. The wine sector is a significant source of income for the local economy; therefore, we have been organising this wine tourism month for several years to attract as many wine tourists to our town as possible.”
Sonia Ruiz, the councillor for tourism, encouraged residents of Villarrubia and the surrounding area to participate in these activities to highlight the world of wine, noting that this is the month when must turns into wine, allowing visitors to enjoy the new vintage, which comes from excellent quality grapes. She also expressed gratitude for the involvement of El Progreso and other associations.
The calendar of wine tourism and gastronomic activities will kick off on Saturday, 7 November, just before World Wine Tourism Day. The first event will be a guided tour and wine tasting at the cooperative El Progreso, starting at 11 am. Due to limited capacity, participants must register by 5 November at the Tourist Office located in the Municipal Ethnographic Museum.
The following Saturday, 14 November, the 2nd Local Gachas Competition will take place at the Plaza de Toros, and on Wednesday, 18 November, the “VIII Tapas Route, Taparrubia 2026” will be officially presented at the San Isidro Ethnographic Museum. This Tapas Route will run over two weekends this month, from 20 to 22 and 27 to 29 November, at local hospitality establishments. Additionally, on Saturday, 28 November, a painting workshop using wine will be held at the Ethnographic Museum.
This month presents a great opportunity to enjoy wine tourism in Villarrubia de los Ojos and rediscover this important wine-producing town, which is part of the La Mancha Designation of Origin and included in the La Mancha Wine Tourism Route.
